abstract Plates of bidirectional jute/polyester composite material were manufactured by the contact molding method. These plates were cut to form notched test pieces 80x15x4 mm and immersed in water (1, 10, 30, 90, 180 and 270 days) in order to study the impact behavior of this material. The studied composite exhibited a water saturation limit after an immersion period of approximately 30 days, with Fickian diffusion of water within the material. Williams’ method based on linear elastic fracture mechanics was used to calculate impact toughness GIC, which is due to the intrinsic characteristics of the material.
