abstract The key topic of the research presented in this paper is the modification of the structure and the studies of properties of the Ni-P coatings through building in particles of the Si3N4 ceramic phase followed by a relevant heat treatment. The main subject of the research is focused on the Ni-P nickel-phosphorus coatings together with the Ni-P/Si3N4 composite coatings produced by the chemical reduction method (Fig. 1). The performed investigations cover the results of the phase analysis (Figs 3 and 4), the chemical analysis (Fig. 5 and Table 1) and the metallographic research of the nickel and composite coatings, both prior and after the heat treatment (Fig. 6). The paper also reports the results of the microhardness tests of the produced coatings before and after the heat treatment (Table 2). The analysis of the data obtained from the realized research has shown that building the dispersed powder of Si3N4 into the Ni-P substrate resulted in significant improvements of the mechanical properties of the Ni-P coating. These properties can be additionally increased by an appropriate heat treatment of the Ni-P/Si3N4 coatings.
