abstract The paper presents a review of methods of producing modern thermosetting composites, particularly modern structural polymer composite materials. First the production process (Fig. 1) and the structure (Fig. 2) of sheet moulding compounds (SMC) have been briefly characterised and ways of their further processing mentioned. Then subsequent moulding methods have been described: the method of winding, the fiber placement method (Fig. 3), the pultrusion process. Three-dimensional reinforcement of composites and preforms has been touched in turn, and the following methods of its production presented: weaving (Figs 5, 6), stranding (Fig. 7), needling and sewing (Fig. 8), and knitting (Figs 9, 10). Next the fiber-reinforced thermoplastic granulated products, including long fiber thermoplastics (LFT), have been presented (Fig. 12), being followed by a description of structural composites obtained by the melt compression moulding - in mould lamination (MCM-IML) method. Then go thermoplastic materials reinforced with roving mats (TWM), and finally the method of reaction injection moulding for structural elements (S-RIM) has been described. The paper presents also application examples of individual composites and discuss their advantages and disadvantages.
