abstract The paper presents the results of friction and abrasive wear measurements of composites in the α-alumina/tetragonal zirconia system. Two types of materials with mutually interpenetrating phases in a continuous manner were investigated. Pure alumina and zirconia samples were used as the reference materials. Ball-on-disc tests were conducted at 20 and 500°C. An alumina ball was applied as the counterpart. The tests showed that the composites have a significantly reduced wear rate and friction coefficient when compared to monophasic materials. Improvement of the properties was noticeable especially at the elevated temperature.
