abstract Fracture toughness KIc and χ dimensionless parameter characterizing the integrated effect of the residual indentation stress field over the half-penny crack for the Al2O3-ZrO2 composite and comparatively for alumina ceramics has been determined. Indentation induced crack growth in bending based on controlled precracks generated by indentation of Vickers hardness indenter into tested material was used. Plot with relationship Y = ψσc2/P in function of X = c1.5/ P for Al2O3-ZrO2 composite and alumina ceramics was presented. These KIc values with data obtained from own measurements by means of conventional method based on static three-point bending of SENB bends mechanically notched were compared. The relations of KR versus crack length c (R curve) for alumina ceramics and alumina-zirconia composite were revealed only for conventional method.
