abstract The epoxy compositions and composites hardened with the product of chemical degradation of poly(ethylene terephthalate) with triethanolamine and 1-butylimidazole have been investigated. Epoxy resin used was Epidian 6 (product of Chemical Works “Organika Sarzyna” in Nowa Sarzyna) and as fillers and nanofillers were applied two types of silicas, products of Institute of Chemical Technology and Engineering, Poznan University of Technology, Organobentonite and MMT-PS1 (the invention of Polymer Institute, Szczecin University of Technology) products of ZG-M “Zebiec” S.A., Starachowice. The nanofillers were introduced to the compositions in amounts 1, 3, 5 g per 100 g of the epoxy resin. The hardeners were applied in 28.8 g PET/TEA or 1 g 1BI per 100 g of the resin. The time of dispergation of nanofillers was 20 minutes. Epoxy adhesives/composites were hardened in temperature 140°C for 4 hour. The investigations of viscosity of epoxy composition were carried out with use of the rheometr ARES, Rheometric Scientific: the diameter of plates 25 mm, thickness between plates 1 mm. The glass temperature composites (DMTA method) was measured with use of the apparatus Mark II, Polymer Laboratories, heat rate 3°C/min, frequency 1 Hz. The bending strengths were measured according to standard PN-EN ISO178 (speed rate 1 mm/min) with using of testing machine Instron 4026, Instron Corporation. The epoxy adhesives were speeded on aluminium the type of duralumin PA6 (the preparation of surface was conducted according to with standard PN-69/C-89300). The investigations of shear strength of epoxy adhesives were done using of testing machine Instron with speed rate 5 mm/min according to with standard PN-ISO 4587. The investigations and analysis of results allowed to draw up the to following conclusions: (i) the rheological investigations shows that addition of small amount of nanofillers increases the viscosity of composition much lower than the introduction of silicas; (ii) the epoxy composites hardened with degradation product PET/TEA have usually higher bending strength and smaller modulus of elasticity; (iii) epoxy composites hardened with degradation product PET/TEA have considerably smaller glass temperatures and smaller thermal durability; (iv) the investigation of shear strength showed that the shear strength of adhesive compositions hardened with degradation product PET/TEA is higher than adhesives hardened with 1-butyloimidazole, (v) obtained adhesive compositions hardened with 1BI have considerably higher shear strength in elevated temperature in comparison to epoxy adhesives cured with PET/TEA degradation product; (vi) introduction of nanofillers MMT-PS 1 increased the shear strength of epoxy adhesives and introduction of the sillicas does not improve shear strength.
