abstract The epoxy adhesive compositions hardened with the product of chemical degradation of poly(ethylene terephthalate) with triethanolamine have been investigated. Epoxy resin used was Epidian 6 (product of Chemical Works „Organika Sarzyna” in Nowa Sarzyna) and as fillers were applied modified silicas, products of Quarzwerke (Frechen, Germany), and nanofiller: Organobentonite, product of ZG-M „Zebiec” S.A., Starachowice. The fillers were introduced to the compositions in amounts 5 g per 100 g of the epoxy resin. The hardeners were applied in different weight ratios since 10 to ca. 30 g per 100 g of the resin. Crosslinking process and mechanical properties of the adhesive joints have been investigated at room temperature. For comparison epoxy systems hardened with Z-1 hardener (triethylenetetramine) were evaluated. Figures 1 and 3 present rheometric curves measured during crosslinking process of the epoxy compositions without (Fig. 1) and with the fillers (Fig. 3). Addition of 5 wt. % of the fillers (Fig. 3) does not influence crosslinking process significantly. However, introduction of the nanofiller (Organobentonite) causes extension of the gelation time in comparison with the same parameter for other investigated systems. Figures 2 and 4 show the shear strength of the unfilled adhesive joints hardened with PET/TEA and Z-1 (Fig. 2) and with the fillers (Fig. 4). The adhesive compositions hardened with the product of PET chemical degradation exhibit considerably larger values of the shear strength than that hardened with the industrial hardener Z 1. Particularly high values of the strength have been found for the adhesive containing ca. 14 g PET/TEA per 100 g of resin and 5 wt. % of Organobentonite. Key words: epoxy adhesives, silica, Organobentonite, aluminium joints, PET solvolysate as epoxy hardener
