abstract This paper presents the application of the spark hardening method used for the deposition of surface layers made of different materials with a special attention to composite gradient layers. The spark hardening method is using the concentrated energy flux which allows to deposit refractory materials (wolfram, molybdenum), carbides (WC, SiC), intermetallics (NiAl, TiAl) and composites (ZrN Al2O3+Mo). The Department of Welding Engineering at Warsaw University of Technology is using the special equipment for the spark hardening process (HARDIT 3005) and is using this apparatus to conduct research related with producing single, multiplayer and composite gradient layers on steel substrates. The research results shown in this paper have the fundamental status and are related with the fabrication of surface layers of selected materials. The microscopic observations and the measurements of microhardness and thickness of produced layers have been included. Key words: spark hardening method, surface layer, composite, gradient
