abstract Composites obtained by in situ method are new group of materials. Their method of producing basis on the aluminothermal reaction becomes between aluminium and metal oxides. The new technological concept consists of production of ceramics suspension of ilmenite powders in liquid aluminium by stirring method, and in the next step high temperature synthesis in this paper has been shown. Parameters of high temperatures synthesis established basis on the results of thermogravimetrical research (Fig. 2). For applied system metal-oxide the synthesis of composite may be realized in diffusion and chemical reaction of condition. Constitution of composite has been determined on the results of thermodynamic calculation which show for condition make possible creation of suspension the optimal fraction of ilmenite particles in liquid aluminium minimum 1:8 (mole fraction) (Fig. 1). For settle condition the synthesis of composites has been made. In composite the Al3Ti, Al3Fe and Al2O3 phases has been obtained (Fig. 6). The structure of composite for each step of technology has been investigated (Figs. 3-5). Figure 3 illustrates structure of ilmenite in aluminium matrix after stirring process. Figure 4 illustrates structure of composite after treatment at 900oC (diffusion process) and Figure 5 after additionally process of synthesis above 1000oC. The phase constitution of composites after these technological treatments is similar, but phase morphology is different. Preferable morphology of composites gives synthesis at 1000oC. Synthesis of composites in low temperatures led to creation of agglomeration of intermetallic phases and particles of alumina in primary areas of ilmenite.
