abstract A possibility to obtain an Al2O3/Ni-P nanocomposite through hot pressing (HP) of Al2O3 powders covered by nickel and phosphorus alloy and using high pressures, above 5 GPa, is described in this paper. The experiments exhibit that hot pressing at 1400oC allows the conservation nanometrically sized particles of Ni-P uniformly dispersed in the ceramic matrix. In this temperature, however, a significant Al2O3 grain growth occurs, and the obtained composite shows high porosity and low density 3.16 g/cm3. Nevertheless, hot pressing at 900oC ensures a uniform microstructure of the nanocomposite, characterized by uniform distribution of nanaometrical Ni-P grains in the ceramic matrix of also nanometrically sized grains. Moreover, the material has high density, 4.21 g/cm3. The results obtained point out a new way of Al2O3-metal composites synthesis, characterized by high ceramic phase volume fraction.
